Bikaner festival is dedicated to
the indispensable 'ship of the desert', camel. The
desert town of Bikaner is located in the Northern part
of Rajasthan. This festival starts off with a
magnificent procession of bedecked camels against the
red sandstone backdrop of the Junagarh Fort (1588-1593)
in the town. It is a colourful spectacle of beautifully
decorated camels that fascinates the onlookers with

This eight days fair held every
year during the month of Jan-Feb, is popularly known as
the Cattle fair and is the second largest in Rajasthan.
Nagaur Town is the most picturesque of Rajput townships.
Nagaur is a sea of animals, trading over 70,000
bullocks, camels and horses every year. The bullocks are
known for their fleetness. Not only are the animals
lavishly decorated, even their owners flaunt wearing
colourful turbans and long moustaches.

Alwar is nested between a cluster
of small hills of the Aravalli range. Formerly known as
Mewat, Alwar was once an important Rajput state. The
people of the state did not accept any external
interference and daringly resisted against foreign
invasions. In the 12th and 13th centuries, they formed a
group and raided Delhi. But finally the Sultan of Delhi,
Balban (1267-87) suppressed them, bringing the area
under the Muslims rule.

Poosam star andpournami, Shiva and Parvati engaged in an
ecstaticcosmic dance, as Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and the
Devaswatched." This, he said indicates Thai Poosam "is a
dayideal for worship of
